Trump’s youngest son Barron pulls out as Florida delegate: ‘Prior commitments’

Barron Trump, the youngest son of former US President Donald Trump, has declined to be a delegate from Florida at the Republican National Convention to select his father as the party’s presidential nominee, his mother’s office said, according to a BBC report.

This came after the Florida Republican Party announced on Wednesday that Barron Trump, 18, was among the 41 delegates named for the convention from July 15 to 18.

As a delegate, Barron Trump would have stood on the convention floor and joined the Florida delegation in formally nominating his father, the BBC report said.

However, a spokesperson for Barron’s mother Melania Trump said, “While Barron is honoured to have been chosen as a delegate by the Florida Republican Party, he regretfully declines to participate due to prior commitments.”

It is not clear whether Barron Trump, who will graduate from high school next week, will take part in the convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Barron’s half-siblings, Donald Jr, Eric and Tiffany, on the other hand, will serve as delegates for Florida, where Donald Trump resides and is a voter.

Meanwhile, Ivanka Trump, who earlier said she won’t be a part of her father’s re-election campaign, and her husband Jared Kushner have not been confirmed as participants for the Milwaukee convention.

Unlike his father and his other family members, Barron Trump has remained away from the limelight with his mother reported to be fiercely protective of his privacy, the BBC report said.

The 18-year-old attended a private school in Maryland during his father’s presidency from 2016 to 2020. He is the only son of Donald Trump and Melania Trump.

During an interview, Donald Trump said Barron liked politics. “It’s sort of funny. He’ll tell me sometimes, ‘Dad, this is what you have to do,'” he told Philadelphia’s Talk Radio 1210 WPHT.

Donald Trump is currently occupied with his first of the four criminal trials, where he has been charged with falsifying business records in New York. He has denied any wrongdoing.

However, the judge has granted him permission to attend Barron Trump’s high school graduation on May 17.
