Trump says he ‘purposely’ mixes up Nikki Haley, Nancy Pelosi’s names

Former US President Donald Trump said he “purposely” mixed up the names of former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and his Republican rival Nikki Haley. However, he again appeared to confuse President Joe Biden with former President Barack Obama.

Acknowledging that he “purposely” mixed up Haley and Pelosi’s names, Trump told a crowd in Richmond, Virginia on Saturday night, “I purposely mix up a name, like Birdbrainâ€æ you know who Birdbrain is, right, Nikki, with Nancy Pelosi”.

“I put them in because they’re interchangeable in my mind. Except I have to say, I shouldn’t say this about a semi-Republican, but I think Pelosi’s probably a little bit smarter, actually,” the former President said.

At a campaign rally in New Hampshire in January, Trump had mixed up Haley with Pelosi while discussing the January 6 Capitol riots in 2021.

He thought the former South Carolina Governor, who was working in the private sector at the time, had been responsible for security at the US Capitol on the day of the insurrection.

In response, Haley, Trump’s last remaining rival for the Republican presidential nomination, expressed concern about having a President whose mental fitness is questionable under the pressures of the presidency.

Trump addressed the Richmond rally as he secured an easy victory in the Republican caucuses held in Michigan, Idaho and Missouri, beating Haley in all the three states on Saturday.

While addressing the crowd, Trump also insisted that he intentionally referred to President Biden as “Obama” Trump after he had mixed up the two at earlier rallies.

“I do that because you know that makes a point. Do we understand that, right? Because a lot of people say he’s running the country. I don’t personally think so,” Trump said.

But more than an hour into his address, the former President appeared to mix up Obama and Biden again, when he said “(Russian President Vladimir) Putin, you know, has so little respect for Obama that he’s starting to throw around the ‘nuclear’ word”.
