Is JD Vance on track to become the next US President?

The next presidential election in the US is over three years away, but the White House race is already in full swing. The vice president, JD Vance, is making headlines for a bold step that could get him at the forefront of the Republican Party.

The 40-year-old has been named as the finance chair of the RNC. This positions him as the first sitting vice president to serve in such a role.

Vance, as finance chair, will be in charge of party fundraising in the build-up to the 2026 midterm elections. He will manage donors and organise fundraising campaigns.

In a statement about his new role, Vance said, “Last year, President Trump won a historic election victory, taking back the White House and helping Republicans regain control of the Senate and retain control of the House. But to fully enact the MAGA mandate and President Trump’s vision that voters demanded, we must keep and grow our Republican majorities in 2026.”

Vance’s appointment has ignited speculation. Ronna McDaniel, the former chair of the Republican Party, explained the significance of Vance’s new position.

Speaking on Sky News’s Trump 100 podcast, McDaniel said, “This is a power move from a political standpoint and somebody who understands how the rules are made.”

She also predicts that Vance could be the Republican presidential nominee in 2028. She said, “My money would be on JD to become the Republican nominee.”

McDaniel also stressed how Vance’s role will help him build connections that could prove invaluable in the future.

“This has never happened in the history of the party, where the vice president said, ‘I’m gonna be the finance lead for the national party’. So what does that mean? It means he’s gonna interact with all the major investors heading into 2028. He’s gonna know them intimately,” she said.

Trump on Vance’s future

However, President Donald Trump has been cautious not to speculate about Vance’s future political ambitions. When asked if he had pictured Vance as the Republican nominee for 2028, Trump replied, “No, but he’s very capable.”

“So far, I think he’s doing a very fantastic job. It’s too early; we’re just starting,” he added.
