In a first in 30 years, New York city sees no shooting victims for 5 straight days
The New York Police Department (NYPD) on Thursday declared that the city reported no deaths or injuries from any shooting incident for the past five days, a first in 30 years.
Highlighting the work of New York City cops, the police department took to social media platform X and wrote, “For the first time in 30 years, there have been 0 shooting victims in New York City for a 5-day period.”
“This is the longest we’ve gone without a shooting victim since the beginning of the CompStat era and is a result of the brave work that the members of the NYPD do every day,” the New York City police added.
This development comes weeks after a mass shooting outside a nightclub in Queens rocked New York City on New Year’s Day, leaving 11 injured.
However, the city reported no gun-related deaths in December 2024, as against nine people who lost their lives due to gun violence in December 2023, according to NYPD’s data.
In fact, the number of shooting-related incidents saw a steady decline for the third consecutive year in New York City, according to NYPD’s official website.
Crime in the city also saw a sizeable reduction in 2024 with 3,662 fewer incidents and thousands of fewer victims as compared to 2023, top New York City cop Jessica S. Tisch told reporters at the start of 2025.
“While there were thousands fewer victims of major crimes—including shootings, murders, robberies, and other violent acts—in 2024, there is still much more work to be done to keep New Yorkers safe, to make them feel safe, and to improve their overall quality of life in the year ahead,” said Tisch
The number of shooting incidents and the number of shooting victims in 2024 saw a decline of 7.3% and 4.2% respectively as compared to 2023, as per the NYPD’s data.
Armed with data, the NYPD had positioned thousands of uniformed cops on foot in pockets of the city witnessing high levels of crime.
Experts claim that NYPD’s increased vigils across five geographical boroughs in New York City, especially in sensitive areas, have served as a major deterrent.
