Hillary Clinton seeks Trump revenge, through Kamala Harris
It was a night for Vice President Kamala Harris, but veteran Democratic Party leader Hillary Clinton got the loudest cheers and applause. It was a moment of revenge for Hillary, a former rival of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, when the crowd at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) erupted in chants of “lock him up”, after her mention of the 34 felony convictions of the former President.
The DNC is scheduled from August 19-22 in Chicago.
Hillary Clinton ran against Donald Trump in a bitter 2016 election. Monday’s speech at the DNC and the loud cheers were her moment of revenge against Trump, who had vilified her throughout the campaign. The means, however, was another woman, a woman of colour, Kamala Harris.
ALL APPLAUSES FOR HILARY CLINTON AT DNC
The standing ovation that Hillary received after her speech said it all. The applause lasted for 1.5 minutes and was louder than what Kamala Harris received, according to the New York Post.
Hillary Clinton focused her speech on women’s struggle for political space, and contrasting Kamala the attorney to Trump, “the criminal”.
She thanked President Joe Biden for his life-time of service and passing on the baton to Harris. She termed it a “new chapter”.
Hillary spoke about Shirley Chisholm’s 1972 White House bid and Geraldine Ferraro’s 1984 nomination to be the first female vice president of the US.
Then she spoke about her 2016 nomination and how 66 million Americans “voted for a future where there are no ceilings on our dreams”.
Despite her loss, she highlighted how women ran for several top offices since 2016.
“I wish my mother and Kamala’s mother could see us. They would say, keep going,” NY Post reported Hillary as saying.
HARRIS AND HILARY VS TRUMP
Hillary Clinton then went on to contrast prosecutor Harris with the “criminal” Trump.
“As a prosecutor, Kamala locked up murderers and drug traffickers. Donald Trump fell asleep at his own trial. And when he woke up, he made his own kind of history. The first person to run for president with 34 felony convictions”, she said.
She grinned as the crowd at the DNC erupted into chants of “lock him up”, reports Politico.
This was a sweet revenge for her as those were the words repurposed from the 2016 campaign of Republicans when Trump gave the rallying cry of “lock her up”, demanding she be jailed.
However, in a Fox News interview, Trump denied that he called for Hillary’s arrest, trial and jailing. This despite him publicly seeking “lock her up” multiple times since 2016.
With Kamala Harris, a surprise Democratic candidate after Biden pulled out of the race, is leading Trump in approval rating, including in several swing states. Trump and the Republicans tried to mock her on her identity but seem to have a crisis now. And by touching their raw nerve, Hillary Clinton has had her moment of revenge.
