Florida University shooting: What we know so far
One person was killed and at least six others were hospitalized, including one in critical condition, after a shooting at Florida State University in Tallahassee on Thursday. A suspect is in custody, and the investigation is currently underway as officials work to determine if anyone else was connected to the incident.
Emergency responders, including ambulances, fire trucks, and patrol vehicles from various law enforcement agencies, rushed to the Florida State University campus just west of the state capital after the university issued a midday alert about an active shooter near the student union.
Campus Lockdown and Police Response
A follow-up alert from the university confirmed that police were actively securing the campus. Officers were conducting room-by-room sweeps to ensure safety.
“Law enforcement officers will use the safe word SEMINOLE to confirm it is safe to open the door,” the alert read. “Continue to shelter in place until contacted by law enforcement.”
Eyewitness Accounts
FSU junior Joshua Sirmans, 20, described the chaos inside the university’s main library when alarms began sounding to warn of an active shooter. He said students were evacuated under the guidance of law enforcement, exiting the building with their hands raised.
FBI Joins Investigation
A spokesperson confirmed that FBI officials are on-site assisting local authorities with the ongoing investigation. However, additional details about the suspect have not been released.
Trump Reacts
During a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Trump addressed the situation and called it a ‘shame’. “I have been briefed on the Florida State University active shooter. It’s a shame,” he said.
Campus Still on Alert
As of the latest updates, students and staff were still being asked to remain sheltered while law enforcement continued to secure the area. At the time of writing this news, the full extent of the injuries and the number of people involved remain unclear.
