Dress dressmaker Bhanu Athaiya, India’s first Oscar winner, died at her house on Thursday after extended sickness, her daughter stated. She used to be 91.
Athaiya, who gained an Oscar for her paintings within the 1983 movie Gandhi, kicked the bucket peacefully in her sleep, her daughter Radhika Gupta instructed PTI.
The ultimate rites happened on the Chandanwadi crematorium in South Mumbai.
“She kicked the bucket early this morning. 8 years in the past, she used to be identified with a tumour in her mind. For the ultimate 3 years, she used to be bedridden as a result of one facet (of her frame) used to be paralysed,” her daughter stated.
Athaiya, who used to be born in Kolhapur, started her occupation as a fancy dress dressmaker in Hindi cinema with Guru Dutt’s 1956 tremendous hit C.I.D. She gained the Academy Award for Highest Dress Design in Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi in conjunction with John Mollo.
