Champions League: Champions Real Madrid leave it late to set up Arsenal clash, here is the confirmed quarterfinal line-up

It was yet another dramatic night of UEFA Champions League football as Real Madrid beat Atletico 4-2 on penalties to reach the quarter-finals. It was an enthralling last-16 tie which ended 2-2 after extra time in a raucous atmosphere at Metropolitano on Wednesday, before Real Madrid produced another thrilling win, keeping with their rich tradition of getting over the line in tight encounters and causing more European heartache for their city rivals. Earlier on Tuesday, it was Paris Saint Germain who prevailed in another thriller, ending Liverpool’s hopes of a treble this season, as they won 1-0 at Anfield to level the tie and then prevailed in the shootout.

Here is the quarterfinal lineup. The fixtures will be played on April 8/9 and April 15/16:

Real Madrid vs Arsenal

For the first time since Thierry Henry scored a sensational solo goal at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in 2005/06 season (followed by a 0-0 draw at Highbury), Arsenal will meet Real Madrid in arguably the fixture of the quarterfinals. The English side’s title challenge domestically has fizzled out and they will face a huge ask against the 15-time and defending Champions League winners from Spain.

After a stuttering league phase last year, Luis Enrique’s PSG have everyone’s attention in the UCL knockouts now, putting in two elite performances to pack off Liverpool. For Unai Emery’s Villa, a famous European night awaits.

Dortmund vs Barcelona

Borussia Dortmund rallied to beat Lille on Wednesday and will reunite with former star forward Robert Lewandowski and Barcelona in the quarterfinals, starting in Spain. Barcelona’s first-half showing against Benfica in the second leg will have sent a warning sign to other clubs, with Lamine Yamal scoring another worldie.

Bayern vs Inter

Bayern Munich and Inter Milan meet in the quarterfinals for a rematch of the 2010 final won by the Italian giants. For Bayern, with Munich staging the final on May 31, it will be a chance to get one step closer to play the title clash at the home stadium.
