Adhir writes to President, calls for invoking of Article 355 in Bengal


Amid a full-blown political fight between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP over the violence in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, Congress chief in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind, urging him to invoke Article 355 of the Charter to make certain that the state executive purposes in response to the provisions of the Charter.

“The law-and-order state of affairs in West Bengal has utterly damaged down. It is extremely unhappy to notice that all the way through final month itself there have been 26 political murders in West Bengal. Ballot violence and put up ballot violence has claimed many lives. The entire state is within the grip of worry and violence,” Chowdhury mentioned in his letter to the President.

Chowdhury had raised the problem in Parliament Monday.

Mentioning that he raised the problem in Parliament to attract the eye of the country relating to breakdown of the constitutional equipment in Bengal, Chowdhury in his letter mentioned, “In view of the deteriorating legislation and order state of affairs in West Bengal, I request you to invoke Article 355 of the Charter to make certain that the Executive of West Bengal is carried on in response to the provisions of the Charter.”

Article 355 of the Charter offers with an emergency provision during which the Centre can interfere and give protection to a state in opposition to exterior aggression or inside disturbance.
