Cash-at-house case: SC to hear Justice Varma’s plea against in-house inquiry on Monday
A Supreme Court bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and AG Masih will hear on Monday, July 28, Justice Yashwant Varma’s plea challenging the in-house inquiry against him.
Last week, the apex court had agreed to set up a bench to hear Allahabad High Court judge Justice Varma’s plea challenging the legal validity of the in-house inquiry committee. Justice Varma called the in-house inquiry mechanism, which indicted him, “a parallel, extra-constitutional mechanism”.
Former Delhi High Court judge Justice Varma is facing an impeachment motion after a probe into allegations of wads of cash being found at his official residence in New Delhi. He moved the Supreme Court on July 18.
The notice for removal of Justice Varma is likely to be taken up in the Lok Sabha, the Indian news had reported, with the one “received” by former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar in the Rajya Sabha unlikely to be considered.
The developments also follow Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation on Monday evening. As The Indian news reported Tuesday, it came hours after his decision, as the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, to accept the Opposition’s notice on the removal of Justice Varma. Sources said the government believed that the move upstaged its own initiative to bring in such a notice.
