A man was executed in China after a court found him guilty of setting his ex-wife on fire while she was live streaming on an online portal. The man, Tang Lu, was allowed to meet his family once before the execution in the southwestern Sichuan province, The Global Times reported.
In September 2020, Lu set his ex-wife on fire as she was live streaming on Douyin, a video platform similar to Tiktok. The woman, known online as Lamu, died of her injuries a few weeks later.
The case drew widespread condemnation and outrage across the country, turning the focus on what women face in abusive marriages.
Tang had a history of physical abuse towards Lamu, Chinese state media reported, adding that the couple divorced in June 2020. He repeatedly sought her out and asked her to remarry him in the following months, but was turned down.
Lamu, a farmer, shared snippets of her daily life and the Sichuan countryside in short videos and live streams on Douyin. A Tibetan-origin woman, she often wore traditional Tibetan clothing in the videos.
On the day of the incident, Lu appeared behind her when she was live streaming on the platform, poured gasoline on her and set her on fire. He was arrested soon after and was sentenced to death in October 2021. He lost his court appeal in January 2022.
