31,056 vacant government posts in Tripura, 12,338 more sanctioned: Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy
Tripura currently has 31,056 vacant posts across different state government departments, and the finance department recently sanctioned 12,338 additional posts to be filled up, state finance minister Pranajit Singha Roy said in Agartala on Tuesday. Roy also pointed out that in the last seven years of the BJP-led alliance governments, the state has rolled out 17,554 jobs.
Roy made this statement while replying to a calling attention notice moved by former minister and Opposition Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman on the government’s plans to fill up all vacant posts in Tripura.
Roy explained that if anyone retires from service or opts for voluntary retirement or passes away while in service, their posts are considered vacant posts. “Posts rendered vacant in Tripura due to voluntary retirement are very low in number. Different departments keep on creating new posts…Those positions are also considered vacant posts till they are fulfilled,” Roy added.
Roy further explained that if the sanctioned strength of any cadre service is lower than the man-in-position, those positions are also considered vacant posts. For non-cadre posts, they are considered temporary till the government declares them permanent. However, the state government can declare 80 percent of such posts permanent if they are uninterruptedly occupied for 10 years, he added.
Citing the budget-at-a-glance from the budget proposal laid on March 22 this year, the finance minister said 31,056 posts were rendered vacant in different departments across Group A, B, C and D categories from 2018-19 till 2024-25 due to employees retiring from service. This included 3,829 vacancies in 2018-19, 4,596 vacant posts in 2019-20, 4,412 in 2020-21, 4,342 vacancies in 2021-22, 4,678 in 2022-23, 4,604 in 2023-24 and 4,595 vacant posts in 2024-25.
Among them, 6,779 posts are from the Group D category, and a majority of the others are senior-level posts that can only be filled through promotions.
“When we came to power in 2018, we found all promotions were halted since 2015, owing to no vacancies being created in the entry-level positions and senior positions not getting filled up as well. We introduced an ad-hoc promotion policy and tried to resolve this impasse,” Roy said.

He added that 17,554 jobs had been rolled out since the BJP came to power in 2018.
Asked how long it would take for the government to fill all the existing vacancies, Roy said, “Some time will be spent if one wishes to give jobs maintaining transparency. We have created 6,009 posts last year and have sanctioned to fill up 12,338 posts, including specialist and super-specialist doctors, sub-inspectors, agri-assistant, forest ranger etc., from the finance departments. The state government is very sincere in filling up the vacant posts.”
In his point of clarification on the calling attention notice, MLA Sudip Roy Barman proposed a single recruitment examination to fill up all feeder posts.
