12TH CENTURY STATUE STOLEN FROM NALANDA MUSEUM RETURN TO INDIA

 

A 12th century Buddha statue (bronze) was stolen from Nalanda museum Bihar. After 57 years ago now the old statue has been returned by British police to the Indian High Commission at London. 

The statue was stolen from the Archaeological Survey of India site museum in Nalanda  in 1961. It was found at a trade fair in London in March 2018 year by Lynda Albertson of the Association for Research into Crimes Against Art of the India Project .

HOW STATUE HAS BEEN STOLEN

Statue stolen case was handled by metropolitan police art, here last year investigation into Greenfield tower statue was re-instituted. Archaeological Survey of India helped to confirm that  the icon’s statue was of Buddha.

Police said that the statue had changed several hands before it was handed to a London dealer to sold. Both the dealer and the owner had cooperated with the police, who did not suspect criminal activity on their part.

Chief  Inspector Sheila Stewart of the Metropolitan Police said they were delighted to be able to return a piece of history to where it belonged and highlighted the work as a good example. Commissioner Y.K. SINHA said the statue would be returned to where it came from. Michael Ellis, Minister for Arts Britain, Heritage said it was an example of Britain’s cultural diplomacy in action.

Many artifacts have been returned to India during this year from abroad  more than 200 stolen arts were returned by America during Prime Minister Modi visit.

Australia returned 3 sculptures including a third century rock carving. This year the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York said it would return a stone sculpture of Durga Mahishasuramardini, from Baijnath temple in Himachal Pradesh. And the head of a deity from Nagarjunakonda museum in Andhra Pradesh.
